Ascendant Strategies Group Announces Availability Of New Report On Eda Licensing Models

Extensive primary research on Wall Street perceptions of EDA players

SAN FRANCISCO, California - November 30, 2001 - Ascendant Strategies Group, a San Francisco-based business and technology consultancy, and EDA Today, L.C., today announced the availability of their report on EDA licensing models through EDAToolsCafe. This in-depth study clarifies key points of confusion surrounding the various types of EDA licensing models, analyzes their impact on several key financial metrics including revenues and earnings, and details financial analysts’ perceptions of both licensing models and the companies that employ them.

The objectives of this study were to:

    • Clarify the main licensing models of the four largest EDA vendors:  Cadence, Synopsys, Mentor Graphics, and Avant!.
    • Survey the leading financial analysts who track the EDA industry in order to ascertain their current understanding of EDA licensing models.
    • Highlight and resolve any discrepancies between these perceptions.
    • Provide analytical insights and recommendations regarding licensing and pricing practices that serve the best interests of EDA vendors and their customers.

"There has been much confusion surrounding the licensing models employed in EDA and other segments of the software industry," said Jordan Brysk, president of Ascendant Strategies Group. "We hope that through this effort, we can help investors and analysts to make sense of perplexing results, and give vendors the benefit of Wall Street’s perspective," Brysk continued.

"We are proud to have worked on this project to clarify the ramifications of different EDA licensing practices," said Rita Glover, EDA industry analyst and consultant with EDA Today, L.C. "Our joint efforts are providing the market with a conclusive study that addresses issues which are so important as to have affected the revenues for the overall EDA industry for the past several years. We believe that vendors of all types can leverage this information to enact product licensing and maintenance practices that best achieve their financial objectives."

Methodology

The EDA Licensing Models Report is the third installment of an ongoing research and analysis project initiated in September 1999. The latest revision was compiled from research conducted January through March 2001, and was updated with recent financial results through June 2001. The report is 70 pages in length.

Spokespersons representing the investor relations departments at Cadence, Synopsys, Mentor, and Avant! were interviewed directly. These interviews were complemented by interviews with financial analysts who cover and publish reports on the above-named companies. A minimum of three financial analysts were interviewed for each company, and a total of five financial analysts were interviewed overall.

The research was verified by comparing findings with company SEC filings, earnings releases, and monitoring the companies’ earnings release conference calls. Further confirmation was gained by reviewing reports published by several of the interviewed analysts, and selected reports by other analysts who were not interviewed.

Pricing and Availability

The EDA Licensing Models Report is now being made available to the public and is priced starting at $2,695 U.S. For an additional $900, customers can get an electronic version of this important report in PDF format for corporate-wide access on their company's Intranet. Executive presentations and custom consulting based upon the research and analysis are available for an additional fee. This report may be ordered online at http://www.dacafe.com/DACafe/EDATools/EDAbooks/EDAbooks.html#Market.
